President Trump engaged in a heated exchange with Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) during a closed-door lunch meeting Wednesday, reportedly stemming from Cassidy's vote on a measure concerning the U.S. war with Iran. According to a lawmaker present at the meeting, voices were raised as Trump voiced his disappointment with Republicans who supported a War Powers Act vote that limited his wartime authority.
Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) described the encounter as "very pleasant" before detailing the disagreement. He characterized the administration's view as feeling undermined by the Republican votes, stating that "the vote yesterday on the War Powers Act, the president’s very disappointed." Marshall added that administration officials believe the vote "chopped their legs out from under them" and would "undermine the negotiators."
Trump was described by GOP senators as being "mad as a murder hornet" and vocally displeased with Sen. Cassidy for joining three other Republicans in the vote. Steve Witkoff, a Trump special envoy, was also in attendance at the Capitol Hill gathering.
