President Donald Trump announced Friday that the 2026 G20 summit will be held at his Trump National Doral Miami resort, saying the property’s proximity to the airport and its size made it the best site for the gathering of world leaders.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said the summit would coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary and touted Doral’s logistical advantages, saying "everybody wants it there because it’s right next to the airport. It’s the best location." He added that the United States will host the G20 "for the first time in nearly 20 years," and insisted he would not financially benefit from the event.
The administration named National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett as the summit’s lead coordinator and said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will organize the summit agenda. Trump said Doral would allow each country to have separate lodging and meeting space, and pointed to limited hotel availability in Florida in December as a factor in the decision.
Trump purchased the Doral resort out of bankruptcy in 2012 for $150 million. He noted during the announcement that the government would arrange the event so that "we will not make any money on it," without providing further details on the financial arrangements.
The choice recalls an earlier, controversial proposal by the Trump administration to host a 2020 Group of Seven leaders’ summit at Doral. That plan was dropped amid criticism from Democrats and ethics experts who raised concerns about the president using a government event at a property he owned. At the time, the White House faced scrutiny over how hosting the summit at a private resort could create conflicts of interest.
President Trump’s announcement did not include a detailed timeline for security, logistics or contracting related to the summit. Organizing a presidentially hosted international summit typically involves coordination among multiple federal agencies, local authorities and international partners on security, travel, and facilities. The administration has said the White House will publicly release further planning details as they are finalized.
The G20, a grouping of major advanced and emerging economies, addresses global economic policy, trade and other international issues. The summit’s selection of site and host responsibilities reflect both diplomatic priorities and substantial logistical work to accommodate heads of state, delegations and large-scale security operations.
Trump framed the decision as both a point of national pride and practicality, tying it to the 250th anniversary and arguing Doral offered the best available location in South Florida. Critics and former opponents of the earlier Doral proposal have previously said any decision to use a president’s private property for government functions merits heightened transparency and safeguards to prevent the appearance of personal financial gain. The White House said it will provide additional information about the summit’s organization and financial arrangements in coming weeks.
