Donald Trump is experiencing a notable decline in public trust regarding immigration, a central issue of his past campaigns, CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten reported Tuesday.
Immigration was a cornerstone of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and played a role in his 2024 victory, with 53% of voters supporting his anti-immigration agenda at that time, Enten noted.
However, public opinion has shifted dramatically. Currently, 58% of Americans express distrust in Trump on immigration matters, while only 41% say they trust him. This change suggests that the issue is no longer a dependable source of support for the former president.
Enten's analysis also pointed to a broader decline in public confidence in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has recently been in the news following fatal shootings. The drop in support for ICE mirrors the shift in perception regarding Trump's immigration policies.
"No longer is this pillar of Donald Trump’s support, something he can count on anymore," Enten stated. "Donald Trump has lost the trust of the American people on immigration."
