Former President Donald Trump's initiative to incentivize motion picture production in the United States has garnered support from an unexpected coalition, including Democratic lawmakers Rep. Adam Schiff, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, and Rep. Ilhan Omar.
Schiff, who represented the studio-heavy district of Burbank, California, expressed strong agreement with the former president's plan, stating on social media that it is time for bipartisan cooperation to bring film production jobs back to America. Pelosi also indicated her support, telling Fox News Digital that she welcomes the president's engagement on the issue and has long advocated for similar policies.
"We’ve been promoting that for a long time. I’m glad he finally arrived at it," Pelosi said.
Omar shared a similar sentiment, recalling her past support for state subsidies aimed at attracting film productions to Minnesota. She highlighted the success of projects like the 1996 film "Fargo" and the "Mighty Ducks" series in the Twin Cities, noting that the reduction of state subsidies has made it more challenging to attract such productions.
"When I was in the Minnesota House, I was very supportive of Minnesota having subsidies so we can have more movies being made inside Minnesota like the movie ‘Fargo,’" Omar said. "It could be a really cool thing [and] also bring us money to states that can use it."
The push to bring film production back to the U.S. comes amid concerns that productions have increasingly moved to other states or countries due to cost incentives. Actor Jon Voight, who was appointed a special envoy to Hollywood by Trump, has previously stated that it was cheaper for a film crew to travel to Europe for a short period than to shoot for a single day in Los Angeles. Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also attempted to address these issues during his term, encountering obstacles.
Earlier in the year, California Governor Gavin Newsom also voiced support for federal initiatives to bolster Hollywood, stating, "California built the film industry – and we’re ready to bring even more jobs home… Now it’s time for a real federal partnership to Make America Film Again."
