Rep. Andy Ogles, a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump, is navigating a significant Republican primary challenge in Tennessee's 5th Congressional District on Thursday. Ogles is seeking a third term against Charlie Hatcher, the state's former agriculture commissioner, who secured an eleventh-hour endorsement from Gov. Bill Lee.

The race serves as a gauge of Trump's influence in deep-red Tennessee, a state he won by double digits in 2024. Ogles has highlighted his endorsements from Trump and House GOP leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. Jim Jordan, as evidence of his conservative credentials. "The golden endorsement that anyone wants is that of President Trump's, which I have," Ogles stated. He characterized his backing as coming from "conservatives," while suggesting his opponent's supporters were "less conservative."

Despite Trump's endorsement and his incumbent advantage, Ogles has faced substantial opposition, including a super PAC, the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition, which has spent approximately $1.3 million to unseat him. A top donor to this group is billionaire Chris Larsen, who has also contributed to Vice President Kamala Harris's presidential campaign.

Ogles is a member of the House Freedom Caucus, a group known for challenging House GOP leadership. However, Ogles has also played a role as a liaison between Speaker Johnson and the conservative flank of the House Republican Conference. Johnson recently spoke in support of Ogles, emphasizing his importance to maintaining and expanding the Republican majority in the House and highlighting Ogles's role in negotiating key legislation, such as extending Trump's tax cuts.

"We're working with a one or two vote margin, and at the end of the day when things are tight, Andy Ogles is one of the members who's a small handful of guys who helps deliver the vote," Johnson said, calling Ogles his "agent on the floor."

Gov. Lee, in his endorsement video, described Hatcher as a 25-year friend and a conservative who has supported Trump since "day one." Hatcher, in response, pledged to work for sensible solutions, defend conservative values, support Trump's agenda, and help lower living costs for Tennessee families.

This endorsement marks a notable divergence for Lee, who previously backed an incumbent in a state Senate race that Trump opposed in 2024. Trump endorsed the challenger, who ultimately won, and subsequently criticized Lee on social media as a "RINO."
