Donald Trump announced a pledge to issue a $5,000 dividend to every adult American citizen if Republicans win control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Trump stated that the payment would be contingent on the GOP's electoral success and would require recipients to spend the money within the United States.

During his address at the GOP midterm convention on Wednesday, Trump linked the potential payment to the nation's economic performance, saying, "Because we’ve done so well and because our country is making so much money that, only I can make this promise to you... because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000."

However, the promise has been met with skepticism, drawing attention to past instances where Trump made similar financial pledges to voters that did not come to fruition. As reported by Fox News senior White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich, Trump had previously promised Americans $2,000 rebates in connection with his tariff policies. Those checks, she noted, had not materialized, particularly after facing court challenges.

Furthermore, critics have pointed to Trump's earlier embrace of the concept of returning funds, allegedly sourced from savings generated by an unofficial "Department of Government Efficiency" in the early days of a potential second term. These proposed $5,000 checks, intended to distribute these claimed savings, also never materialized.

The recent pledge has led to accusations on social media that Trump is attempting to bribe voters in the lead-up to the elections.
