Trump Reports 'Very Good' Meeting with Iranian Leaders Amid Peace Deal Scramble

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that U.S. officials met with their Iranian counterparts at the UN General Assembly in Manhattan, suggesting discussions focused on ending the nearly seven-month conflict.

Trump stated that the meeting concluded about an hour prior to his remarks and lasted for three hours, describing it as "very good." He added that Iran has the choice between "potential greatness or obliteration" and that "it's to their advantage to make a deal." The president also indicated that another meeting is scheduled with Iran in the near future.

While it was unclear if Trump himself attended the session, he confirmed that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner were present. Given Trump's schedule of meetings with the Prime Ministers of Japan and the UK, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the same day, his personal attendance appears unlikely.

Details of the discussions were not immediately released, but the meeting is understood to have centered on the ongoing war in Iran and potential avenues for its resolution, continuing prior diplomatic efforts.

Kushner and Witkoff have been leading the U.S. negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, engaging with mediators across the Middle East to broker a peace agreement.

Earlier, during his address to the UN, Trump outlined a choice facing Iran: to accept a deal for rebuilding or face "annihilation" through additional strikes. He also accused the Iranian regime of significant internal repression, alleging the slaughter of over 72,000 of its citizens this year, with 10,000 recently killed for protesting.

The UN General Assembly provides a rare venue for engagement between U.S. and Iranian officials, with previous meetings having taken place in locations such as Rome, Pakistan, and other Middle Eastern sites.
