Trump Renews Push to Rename New Mexico 'New America,' Cites Potential Economic Gains

Former President Donald Trump has once again proposed that New Mexico change its name to "New America," asserting that such a rebranding could lead to increased home values, higher incomes, and enhanced state pride.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!" He suggested the new name would "add great value and prestige to the State! Home Values and Incomes would rise, and you would be even prouder while saluting our beautiful American Flag!"

Trump also alluded to election integrity in the state, writing, "Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!" He did not provide evidence to support these claims regarding election accuracy or the economic impact of a name change.

This is not the first time Trump has floated this idea. Last month, he shared a map with "Mexico" crossed out and replaced with "America," a post that was amplified by the official White House X account. He also pitched the name change at the RNC Midterm Convention on September 9, claiming the concept was well-received by the public, although he acknowledged the "radical left" might object.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham previously pushed back against the proposal, stating that the state's name has been established "since before the United States existed" and that it "isn’t up for debate." She criticized the White House for focusing on a name change while her administration addressed issues like child care, education, healthcare, and housing. "While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work," she said at the time.

The state's constitution, in Article I, explicitly states, "The name of this state is New Mexico." Trump's proposal does not outline a formal process for enacting such a change.

This suggestion follows previous instances where Trump has advocated for renaming geographical features. He previously called for renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America" for federal use and the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America."
