President Donald Trump signed an order on Thursday renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," a decision he stated reflects the body of water's significant U.S. territory.
"This is a lake that has most of its volume in the United States," Trump said in the Oval Office. "The deepest parts of the lake sit in United States territory. So, this will reflect that. This is American Lake."
The renaming occurs amid an intensifying trade dispute between the United States and Canada. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has analyzed the trade situation, arguing that Canada's retaliatory trade strategies are expected to backfire.
