President Donald Trump has reiterated his proposal to construct an "North America Air Filter Barrier" along the U.S. border with Canada, sharing an AI-generated image of the concept on his Truth Social platform.
Trump also imposed a 50 percent tariff on Canadian goods, which is set to take effect in 30 days. The tariffs will cover products including wine, hockey sticks, and cement, according to a White House fact sheet. An administration official stated that Trump requested aides explore additional tariffs, accusing Canada of "coming in and poisoning our air."
The former president asserted that Canada has unfairly discriminated against American autos, alcohol, and dairy products. He vowed to hold Canada responsible for allegedly failing to properly maintain its forests and brush, which he claims led to wildfires sending smoke plumes across U.S. cities.
"Clean Air. Clear borders," read a sign in the AI-generated image depicting a large furnace filter along the border. Trump described the smoke as "terrible" and "filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air."
This move follows a meeting between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, where they discussed the wildfires. Trump stated the conversation went well but emphasized the need for Canada to stop the fires from affecting U.S. air quality, suggesting tariffs or damages could be sought.
Canadian officials indicated a willingness to negotiate a trade deal and respond to the tariffs if necessary. Prime Minister Carney noted that more than 70 percent of Canada's exports go to the U.S., making it its largest trade partner. He suggested the tariff threat might be a negotiation tactic, acknowledging that such actions are sometimes associated with trade negotiations.
The tariffs exclude energy products, potash, fish, and critical minerals, but include goods previously protected under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The 2020 trade pact was not renewed by the U.S., leading to ongoing negotiations that could extend until 2036.
Wildfire smoke has significantly impacted air quality in various U.S. cities, including Detroit, New York City, and Washington, D.C. In Detroit, assembly line workers at Ford Motor's Michigan Assembly Plant were reportedly taken to hospitals due to poor air quality.
In separate trade actions, Trump also threatened to impose a major tariff on Mexico due to an outbreak of the parasite cyclosporiasis, which public health officials suspect may be linked to lettuce. Cases of the parasite have surged across 41 states.
Additionally, the Trump administration announced a new wave of tariffs targeting 60 trading partners, ranging from 10 percent to 12.5 percent, impacting major economies like China, India, and the European Union. These levies followed the expiration of a temporary 10 percent tariff on imports that had been reimposed after a Supreme Court ruling.
