Trump Rallies in Ohio to Boost GOP Candidates in Tight Races
The former president is campaigning in a key battleground state, focusing on a critical Senate contest and the gubernatorial race, amid concerns about economic sentiment and data center development.
President Donald Trump brought his midterm campaign tour to Ohio on Saturday, aiming to energize voters and bolster Republican candidates in a state considered a crucial battleground. Trump’s visit includes a rally near Dayton where he will support contenders in competitive races for the House, Senate, and governorship.
The Senate race in Ohio is particularly pivotal. Republican Jon Husted, appointed to fill the vacancy left by Vice President JD Vance, is seeking to secure the seat outright. Democrats have identified Ohio as a key state for potentially regaining Senate control, with former three-term Senator Sherrod Brown challenging Husted.
Sen. Tim Scott, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, described the race as "dead-even" and "as tight as ticks." He expressed optimism that Husted is "a closer" who can win the contest.
Trump’s rally comes as Republicans express concerns that Husted’s campaign has not gained sufficient traction. Democrats have targeted Husted’s role in attracting data centers to Ohio during his tenure as lieutenant governor. These large facilities powering artificial intelligence have become a contentious issue, drawing bipartisan opposition due to concerns over electricity prices, farmland, and water supplies.
Husted's campaign proposed legislation that would require utility regulators to charge large power users more, as consumers grapple with high energy costs. However, the bill was blocked by nearly all Democrats. Trump, conversely, has been a vocal proponent of data centers, arguing that the U.S. must lead in AI development and cannot cede ground to China.
Senator Sherrod Brown’s campaign has criticized Husted for supporting data centers and receiving donations from retail magnate Les Wexner, who had ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein. Husted has since donated Wexner’s contributions to an anti-human trafficking charity.
In the gubernatorial race, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy is facing off against Democrat Dr. Amy Acton. Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate, initially had strong backing from Republicans and expectations of an easy win in the GOP-dominated state. However, despite significant fundraising and advertising spending, he is now in a close contest with Acton.
Trump’s campaign has also focused on economic messaging, attempting to persuade voters that the economy is performing better than current sentiment suggests, despite polls indicating public frustration with economic conditions. Issues such as the high cost of living and elevated gas prices are significant concerns in the Dayton area, exacerbated by recent layoffs at a local truck factory.
