Trump Rallies in Nebraska Amid Tight Senate Race
Former president visits Grand Island to support Republican incumbent Pete Ricketts in a contest against independent Dan Osborn.
Former President Donald Trump is holding a campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, marking a recent stop in a series of campaign events held in traditionally Republican states. Nebraska is a reliably red state where Trump has won the statewide vote by approximately 20 points in his past three presidential elections. However, the state's 2nd Congressional District, which includes Omaha, is considered a key target for Democrats in the upcoming elections.
Early in-person voting in Nebraska begins on the same day as the rally. The visit comes as Republican incumbent Sen. Pete Ricketts faces a closely watched general election contest against independent candidate Dan Osborn. Ricketts, who previously served as Nebraska's governor, secured his Senate seat in a special election in 2024.
There is no Democratic candidate on the Senate ballot in Nebraska after the party's primary winner withdrew. Democrats are largely backing Osborn, who insists he will not caucus with either party. Ricketts has characterized Osborn as a "Democrat Dan" attempting to mislead voters.
Ricketts has also faced recent scrutiny over a past gubernatorial decision to pardon an individual convicted of sexual assault, a vote he defended by stating his commitment to protecting Nebraskans. Osborn, a union steamfitter, has stated his intention to be an independent voice for the state and has apologized for leaked audio from a campaign event where he made remarks about hypothetical Trump voters.
Trump has endorsed Ricketts, praising him as someone who "will always put Nebraska first, and he'll always put America first," while criticizing Osborn's sincerity. Trump has also endorsed Republican Brinker Harding in the race for the 2nd Congressional District, though Harding has stated he has previously scheduled events and will not attend the rally.
Key issues in Nebraska include the rising costs of fertilizer and fuel impacting the state's agriculture industry, exacerbated by global conflicts, and the administration's temporary suspension of beef tariffs, which both Ricketts and Osborn have opposed. Nebraska's 3rd District, represented by Republican Adrian Smith, is not in the area where Trump is campaigning on Monday.
