Trump Rallies in Michigan to Boost GOP Senate Candidate Rogers Against El-Sayed

President Donald Trump is holding a rally in Michigan on Sunday, continuing his intensive midterm campaign schedule by supporting Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. The visit to Port Huron aims to bolster the GOP's chances in the race for an open seat, where they face Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

The contest is a key focus for Republicans, who have not won a Senate race in Michigan in over three decades. Trump has frequently criticized El-Sayed, a former public health official, using rhetoric that Democrats have condemned as Islamophobic. Trump has falsely claimed El-Sayed is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed, who would be the first Muslim senator if elected, has encouraged Trump to visit Michigan, believing it would ultimately benefit his campaign.

Rogers, a former congressman, has also drawn criticism for his campaign's approach. During a debate, he questioned El-Sayed's loyalty, asking, "Are you for America, or are you for these terrorist groups overseas?" El-Sayed called the question "shameful" and affirmed his support for the Constitution. Rogers has denied his criticisms are religiously motivated.

El-Sayed himself has faced scrutiny for past remarks. Following an attack on a Detroit-area synagogue, he stated, "hurt people hurt people." He later apologized for the comment, clarifying it was not intended to justify the violence. The attacker had lost relatives in an Israeli airstrike.

This election is seen as significant beyond Michigan. Republicans are attempting to frame El-Sayed as a symbol of a shifting Democratic Party, while progressives hope his candidacy will demonstrate their influence in a crucial swing state, potentially shaping future presidential primary dynamics. El-Sayed previously served as a public health official and unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2018. Rogers lost his previous Senate bid by a narrow margin.

Trump's rally in Michigan follows former President Barack Obama's appearances in the state and Ohio on Saturday, campaigning for Democratic candidates. The GOP is working to overcome voter concerns about the economy and other national issues in the closing weeks before Election Day.
