Trump Puts Pressure on Justice Alito Regarding Retirement
Former President Donald Trump publicly speculated about Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's potential retirement, an unusual move that experts say could be seen as pressure on the conservative jurist.
Former President Donald Trump has publicly commented on Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's potential retirement, in what appears to be an effort to encourage the 76-year-old justice to step down from the high court. Trump's remarks were made on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Alito, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, confirmed in a public interview earlier this month that he had considered retiring this year and plans to do so again before the 2027 term. "It’s something that I think that somebody at my age has to think about every term," Alito stated. He added, "But I thought that I could still make a valuable contribution, which is why I became a justice and a judge in the first place."
Trump, who has frequently praised Alito as one of the "Greatest of All Time," has also expressed his desire to appoint a fourth justice to the Supreme Court should an opportunity arise. He has previously stated he is "prepared" to nominate up to three justices in the event of vacancies, indicating his administration has been vetting potential replacements. He noted in an interview earlier this year, "It’d be nice to say, now I have somebody for 40 years."
This public commentary from Trump comes amid speculation about Alito's future on the court. Alito has been a consistent voice siding with the Trump administration on many key cases. However, Alito stressed in his interview that his retirement considerations are not tied to politics or the current administration, stating, "It’s too hard to predict what the political situation will be and what any president might do with respect to a replacement."
Neither the White House nor the Supreme Court's public affairs office immediately responded to requests for comment.
