Former President Donald Trump has set his sights on renaming New Mexico, posting a map to his Truth Social account on Sunday that showed the state's name altered to "New America." The post featured the word "Mexico" crossed out in red and replaced with "America."
This latest proposal follows a recent renaming of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" amid tensions with Canada over trade tariffs. Trump had previously shared an image of himself altering a map of Lake Ontario, crossing out "Ontario" and writing in "America."
According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, approximately 14 percent of U.S. citizens favored the renaming of Lake Ontario. Despite this, the official Trump Store began selling "Lake America" hats for $55.
Trump's social media activity has also included a video of geese with machine guns patrolling the lake and an AI-generated clip depicting him replacing a "Lake Ontario" sign with a "Lake America" sign.
Earlier on August 30, Trump declared that the U.S. should block all Canadian products unless the companies involved chose to relocate to America. This stance stemmed from failed negotiations between the two countries regarding tariffs on cross-border trade.
The "New Mexico" post is the latest in a series of geographical name changes proposed by Trump. Previously, he suggested renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," a move that drew significant criticism. He also shared a post that appeared to contrast his proposed name changes with what he characterized as "Left"-leaning name alterations, listing examples such as Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day, and the Washington Redskins to the Washington Commanders.
