Former President Donald Trump predicted Argentina would win the World Cup final against Spain on Sunday, citing the exceptional play of Lionel Messi and the soccer insights of his son, Barron.
Speaking to Fox reporter Jenny Taft before the match, Trump acknowledged the difficulty of betting against Messi, particularly after witnessing a pivotal assist that led to a winning goal against England. "I just think it is very hard to bet against Messi, he is great," Trump stated.
Trump, who was attending the game, also highlighted his 20-year-old son Barron's significant interest and knowledge of soccer. "You really have some other really incredible players playing here but I would say right now, when you look, I have always liked Ronaldo, I've always like Messi," he said, adding that he had recently met Messi and known Cristiano Ronaldo.
This prediction comes shortly after Trump hosted Messi and his Inter Miami team at the White House in March to celebrate their 2025 Major League Soccer championship.
Trump also commented on international relations, noting his acquaintance with Argentina's leader, Javier Milei. In contrast, he expressed strong criticism of Spain, recalling a UN summit earlier in July where he attacked the country for insufficient contributions to NATO. "Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate. They don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain," Trump had declared, advising against trade and visits.
However, on his return flight to the United States, Trump indicated that Spain had made overtures to improve their standing with him, stating, "Spain was very generous today. They honoured a request for lots of payments, and if they didn't, we wouldn't have even talked to them."
