Trump Praises WNBA Player Sophie Cunningham's Appearance at Ohio Rally
Former President Donald Trump remarked on Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham's looks, suggesting they would boost game attendance, during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio.
President Donald Trump praised Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, commenting on her appearance and its potential impact on game attendance.
Trump, addressing the topic of transgender athletes, mentioned Cunningham, who recently became a focal point in discussions about transgender participation in women's sports. "She's beautiful," Trump stated, adding, "You probably wouldn't mind her on the team not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance. The attendance would be great." The crowd responded with laughter.
Cunningham, 30, garnered significant attention earlier in the season after voicing her opposition to transgender athletes competing in women's sports. In an interview published in July, she expressed a desire to protect young girls in sports and locker rooms from competing against biological males. She described her stance as being in the middle, agreeing and disagreeing with aspects from both sides of the debate, and noted that people often make assumptions about her beliefs.
Her comments sparked widespread debate within the WNBA, involving players, coaches, and fans. Protests organized by fans at WNBA games followed, leading the league to issue a statement.
Cunningham's season with the Indiana Fever concluded after they were eliminated in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. She is currently an unrestricted free agent. The guard averaged 7.9 points per game this season, her lowest output in the last five years. This was her eighth season in the WNBA and second with the Fever. She was originally drafted 13th overall by the Phoenix Mercury in 2019.
