Trump Praises Socialist Mayor, Frustrating GOP Midterm Strategy

Former President Donald Trump met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a self-described socialist, at Gracie Mansion on September 21, 2026. Trump's public praise for Mamdani, calling him a mayor with "great potential," has drawn criticism from some Republicans who argue it undermines their core midterm election strategy.

Mamdani, the first socialist and first Muslim mayor of New York City, discussed cost of living and housing issues with Trump during the meeting. This encounter comes weeks after Trump repeatedly warned voters about the rise of socialism and communism within the Democratic Party. At a GOP midterm convention in Dallas, Trump characterized Democrats as "crazed lunatics and radicals" and "communists."

The divergence in messaging has left some Republican strategists concerned. "All of it is self-inflicted, off-message, not helpful," one anonymous GOP strategist told Fox News Digital. "None of these candidates out in these states, where these races are tighter and more competitive than they should be, are helped by any of this."

Another anonymous consultant echoed this sentiment, stating, "This is a president who is in a fully self-indulgent period. It doesn't seem like he really cares about winning. It's all off key."

Prominent Trump supporters have also voiced their displeasure. Laura Loomer, an activist and influencer, expressed her dismay on social media, calling Mamdani a "full blown communist jihadist" and questioning the message sent to Trump's base. "We were told to FIGHT communism. But when we fight communism, we see the communist get rewarded... The base is very angry today," she wrote.

However, not all Republicans share these concerns. Alex Bruesewitz, a Trump aide, defended the former president's actions on X, arguing, "It’s not wrong to have friendly relationships with people you disagree with. In fact, it’s healthy and good for you!"

Veteran GOP consultant Dave Carney suggested that the meeting was a matter of presidential duty. "The federal government and the president and the city have to work together," Carney told Fox News Digital, adding that Trump's role as president necessitates such interactions. He contrasted this with elected Democrats who advocate for "radical crazy positions."

Ryan Williams, a Republican strategist, commented that while the praise for Mamdani might anger some on the right, it likely has no significant political implications. Williams suggested Trump "appreciates talent" and sees Mamdani as politically gifted, regardless of policy disagreements.

Republicans are navigating a challenging political climate, aiming to shift midterm elections from a referendum on the party in power to a choice election by portraying Democratic candidates as far-left radicals. Trump's meeting with Mamdani presents a deviation from this strategy for some within the party.
