Former President Donald Trump outlined a tough-on-crime agenda during his address at the Republican National Convention, pledging to eliminate cashless bail and expand the application of the death penalty. Trump stated that his administration would end cashless bail policies and institute the death penalty for individuals convicted of large-scale drug dealing, human trafficking, and murdering law enforcement officers.
Earlier in his administration, Trump signed an executive order aimed at discouraging the use of cashless bail, a system that allows defendants to be released from jail before their trial without requiring a financial bond. This order directed federal agencies to consider withholding federal grants and funding from states and cities that implement cashless bail.
The former president also reinstated the death penalty for federal cases. On his first day in office, he signed an executive order that lifted a moratorium on federal executions previously put in place by the Biden administration and instructed federal prosecutors to prioritize capital punishment in eligible cases.
