Donald Trump has paid E. Jean Carroll more than $5 million in damages, three years after a civil jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation, her lawyers confirmed Tuesday.
Roberta Kaplan, an attorney for Carroll, stated, "Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict." The payment confirmed by Carroll's legal team totals more than $5.62 million, accounting for the original $5 million judgment and accrued interest.
Trump had attempted to delay the payment while seeking to have the Supreme Court reconsider its decision not to hear an appeal of the case. However, a judge overseeing the case ordered him to pay the damages last week.
A representative for Trump's legal team declined to comment on the payment. Trump's lawyers have previously described the case as a "hoax" and "Witch Hunt" funded by Democrats.
Carroll, an 82-year-old former magazine columnist, accused Trump of attacking her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in Manhattan in the mid-1990s. She also accused him of defaming her in a 2022 post on his Truth Social website, in which he denied her allegations.
In 2023, a New York jury awarded Carroll the damages. Trump had placed the awarded sum into a court-controlled account shortly after the verdict, where it remained during the appeals process.
