Trump Officials Scramble for Lawyers Amid Anticipation of Democratic Investigations
Administration figures are reportedly seeking independent legal counsel in anticipation of potential congressional probes should Democrats regain control of Congress after the midterm elections.
Trump administration officials, from Cabinet secretaries to agency staffers, are reportedly rushing to secure legal representation in preparation for a potential surge of congressional investigations should Democrats win control of the House or Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. These individuals are reportedly concerned about facing probes and are seeking lawyers to represent their personal interests, which may diverge from those of the administration.
Lawyers familiar with the situation told The Wall Street Journal that officials are concerned about potential conflicts of interest, as a single firm may be unable to represent multiple staffers simultaneously. This has led to a competitive scramble to retain preferred legal counsel or firms.
Democrats have already initiated inquiries, with committees like the House Oversight Committee and Senate Judiciary Committee sending numerous letters to administration officials and individuals close to former President Donald Trump in recent months. These early actions signal the potential scope of future investigations.
While the Justice Department typically defends administration officials, the individuals reportedly believe hiring independent counsel will better serve their own specific needs.
The White House has dismissed these reports, with spokeswoman Lauren Bis stating that the media is pushing a "false narrative" and that Democrats' agenda is solely focused on pursuing a "witch hunt" against former President Trump. Bis asserted that Democrats lack a genuine agenda to improve Americans' lives.
Despite the White House's response, the administration has also made some recent staffing changes in preparation for potential post-election challenges. Will Scharf, previously a personal lawyer for Donald Trump, was appointed White House counsel. Additionally, Katie Bailey was named director of the Office of Legislative Affairs.
