Trump Mocks Ossoff, Attacks El-Sayed on Georgia Campaign Stage
The president also contrasted his campaign events with former President Obama's remarks in Michigan.
President Donald Trump assailed Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff on Saturday night during a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, criticizing the senator's public image and political platform.
Trump, who appeared alongside Republican Senate challenger Mike Collins and gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson, told supporters that the "fake news" falsely portrays Ossoff as handsome. "I don't think so. These people are handsome. That guy's handsome right there. Our congressmen, they're all handsome to me," Trump said, gesturing to Republican officials present.
He accused Ossoff of cultivating a misleading public image. The president then broadened his criticism to include Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, whom Trump referred to as "Muhammad." El-Sayed is running for the Democratic nomination in Michigan's Senate race.
The Georgia Senate race is a key battleground for Republicans seeking to maintain control of the chamber. Ossoff is running for re-election against Congressman Collins, who has Trump's endorsement.
This is not the first time Trump has targeted Ossoff. He previously mocked the senator at a rally in Dalton, Georgia, on October 16, comparing him to comedian Pee-wee Herman.
Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama campaigned for Democrats in Michigan on the same day, delivering attacks against Trump and his administration. Speaking alongside El-Sayed and Michigan gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson in Detroit, Obama commented on Trump's White House renovations.
"He should be on HGTV," Obama quipped, comparing the White House's updated appearance to "Saddam Hussein opened up a Cheesecake Factory."
Trump had held a campaign event in Fort Myers, Florida, on Friday before traveling to Georgia for Saturday's rally. The appearances by Trump and Obama set up dueling campaign events as both parties aim to mobilize their bases before Election Day on November 3.
