Trump Makes Surprise Visit to NYC Mayor's Mansion
Former President Donald Trump met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion, marking a rare presidential visit to the historic residence.
President Donald Trump made an unexpected visit to New York City on Monday evening, stopping at Gracie Mansion for a closed-door meeting with Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Trump described the mayor's residence as "one of his favorite places in the world," recalling previous visits with past mayors.
The meeting was the third between Trump and Mamdani, but the first to take place in New York City. Their initial encounters occurred at the White House in November 2025, shortly after Mamdani's election, and again in February.
Mamdani's communications director, Anna Bahr, stated that the meeting would address "issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers." The White House confirmed the meeting without providing further details.
The relationship between the two political figures has evolved significantly. During Mamdani's 2025 mayoral campaign, Trump repeatedly criticized him, at one point calling him a "100% Communist Lunatic" and warning about the potential consequences of his policies. Mamdani, in turn, was sharply critical of Trump's administration, particularly concerning immigration enforcement, labeling ICE a "rogue agency" and vowing to block any mass deportation efforts in New York.
However, the tone shifted after Mamdani's election victory. Their first meeting in the Oval Office was described as cordial, with Trump calling Mamdani a "very rational person" who could "surprise some conservative people." Trump also expressed that he would be happy if Mamdani succeeded in leading New York.
Mamdani has indicated that he and Trump maintain contact via phone and text, though he has not disclosed the frequency or specific topics of their conversations.
Presidential visits to Gracie Mansion are infrequent. The last sitting president to visit the mayor's residence was Ronald Reagan in 1981, making Trump's meeting with Mamdani the first presidential visit in 45 years.
Trump's New York City itinerary also includes his address at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday and meetings with several world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi. Discussions are expected to cover Iran, the Middle East, and other international matters before Trump returns to Washington for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
