Trump, Macron Discuss Ukraine, Energy Markets in UN General Assembly Sideline Meeting
The two leaders met at Trump Tower in New York and agreed to coordinate efforts to ease tensions in energy markets and protect civilian infrastructure.
President Donald Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday in New York City on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The leaders discussed the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Iran, and agreed to collaborate on measures to de-escalate energy market tensions.
During their meeting at Trump Tower, Macron and Trump committed to joint actions aimed at protecting critical infrastructure in the Middle East and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. "We decided to act together to ease tensions in the energy markets, by protecting critical infrastructure in the Middle East and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," Macron stated on X, formerly Twitter.
Additionally, the leaders agreed to "pool our efforts to secure a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure and against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure," according to Macron. He emphasized the need to protect civilian populations and initiate peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Macron described the discussion as "very good" and "very constructive," noting the need for increased and more rapid support for Ukraine, particularly in the area of interceptors.
Both Trump and Macron are scheduled to address world leaders at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. The meeting with the French president followed Trump's earlier discussion with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion.
Trump is also expected to meet with Gulf Arab leaders later in the week during the UN General Assembly, according to Axios. The White House had not immediately responded to requests for comment.
