Former President Donald Trump has drawn a stark comparison between the recent migrant surge into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and the situation at the U.S. southern border, warning that a similar or worse scenario could befall the United States if Republicans lose power in the upcoming elections.
During a cabinet meeting at Camp David on Friday, Trump described the events in Spain as a "catastrophe" and an "invasion." He stated that "hundreds of thousands of people" had entered the Spanish territory and asserted that "the same thing's going to happen to us if the Republicans don't get elected, except worse, much bigger, much easier to get into."
According to Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas, approximately 60,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave from Morocco within a 24-hour period. Trump remarked that the situation in Spain was unprecedented and predicted it would "look good compared to what's going to happen to the United States."
Trump also criticized the Biden administration's border policies, claiming that "25 million people" had been allowed into the U.S., many of whom he characterized as criminals. He stated that his administration had removed many of them.
The former president's remarks were echoed by other prominent conservatives. Elon Musk shared a video on X that juxtaposed footage from the Ceuta crisis with scenes from the movie "World War Z," commenting, "Wow, the situation in Spain looks crazy!"
Vice President JD Vance praised the current administration's border policies on X, contrasting them with the images from Spain. "Thank God @POTUS was elected and our country's border no longer looks like this," Vance wrote. "These images out of Spain are an unfortunate reminder of the consequences of mass migration and the radical left-wing globalist policies that have enabled the Invasion of the West."
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller also criticized Democrats, posting on X that "Democrats did this to America every single day for 4 years under Biden and will do it again instantaneously, but orders of magnitude greater, if they are given any form of national power. Democrats will see your home trampled and stolen by invaders and they will rejoice."
The Department of Homeland Security's official social media account also commented, suggesting that Spain could benefit from leadership similar to Trump's, stating, "If Spain had their own President Trump, this wouldn't be an issue. Citizens of Spain should take that into consideration."
In response to the influx of migrants, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on X that his government would implement tougher measures, including increasing security forces and tightening border controls. He also stated that a new maritime barrier would be deployed to aid in migrant returns and expedite deportation procedures for those who entered illegally. Spain also plans to increase cooperation with Moroccan authorities to combat human-smuggling operations believed to be contributing to the crisis.
