Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a landmark civil nuclear deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia is contingent upon Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords, which would involve recognizing the state of Israel.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump specified that the agreement, which would pertain to non-military uses and prevent the enrichment of nuclear material, "will be approved, but is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords."
Trump's remarks come amidst concerns from experts regarding the potential for nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, a region already facing significant instability.
The issue of nuclear capabilities has been a central point of contention in the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict. In 2020, Trump brokered the Abraham Accords, a series of agreements that led to the normalization of relations between Israel and two Arab nations, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Since then, Sudan and Morocco have also normalized ties with Israel.
