President Donald Trump on Tuesday unveiled America.gov, an AI-powered website designed to consolidate information from tens of thousands of federal webpages into a single searchable database. The site is now live and allows users to type questions into a search bar that generates AI chatbot-style responses, akin to platforms like ChatGPT or Gemini.
Trump signed an executive order directing all federal agencies to integrate their websites with America.gov as soon as possible. During a speech at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C., Trump highlighted the site's potential to simplify interactions with the federal government. He stated that the website will help citizens with tasks ranging from reserving a campsite at a national park to choosing a Medicare plan or obtaining earned benefits.
According to U.S. Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia, who helped create America.gov, citizens will be able to complete government forms and track application statuses through the site by 2027. For example, Trump described a future scenario where a woman changing her last name after marriage could simply ask America.gov to fill out the necessary forms and arrange for new Social Security, passport, and insurance cards to be mailed.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz demonstrated how America.gov could simplify prescription ordering and other services. He showcased a case where a woman named Lisa, who had spent over a year trying to enroll in Medicare, was able to navigate the process with assistance from the site. Oz explained that America.gov can clarify applicable situations and guide users through decisions.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that beginning in 2027, Americans will also be able to apply for their first U.S. passport through America.gov. Rubio noted that the current process often involves navigating complex information on the State Department's website. The new platform aims to simplify this by allowing users to upload their own passport photos, eliminating the need for in-person photo sessions, printing forms, or making appointments. Rubio stated that America.gov will guide users through every step of the application process.
More federal services are expected to be integrated into America.gov in the coming months as more agencies connect to the platform. The initiative is part of an effort to streamline bureaucratic processes and improve accessibility to government resources for Americans.
