FIFA has overturned a suspension for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, allowing him to play in the team's next World Cup match after an intervention from the White House, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism. Australian football great Craig Foster called the move an "embarrassment to football," accusing FIFA of compromising its independence.
Balogun received a red card in a previous World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which would have ordinarily resulted in a suspension for the United States' Round of 16 game against Belgium. However, the ban was reversed after the Trump administration reportedly wrote to FIFA urging the governing body to allow the player to compete.
President Trump confirmed his involvement on his social media platform Truth Social, stating, "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!" Reports suggest Trump had a direct conversation with FIFA President Gianni Infantino prior to the decision being finalized.
This unprecedented reversal of a player's suspension for a red card is contrary to standard FIFA World Cup disciplinary regulations. The decision has also angered Belgian officials, who are reportedly considering challenging the ruling. The Royal Belgian FA has stated the decision is in "direct contradiction" of World Cup regulations and that they are exploring all available options to safeguard fair play.
Foster, a prominent figure in Australian football, expressed his dismay on Instagram, criticizing FIFA for what he perceived as capitulation to external pressure. He also referenced prior controversies, including FIFA's introduction of "hydration breaks" and alleged mistreatment of fans and officials during the tournament hosted by the U.S.
"The US player red-carded and in line to miss the host's Round of 16 match against Belgium, has for the first time in World Cup history, been suspended, allowing the US to be at full strength for the match," Foster wrote. "While Trump proudly lets the world know he influenced the outcome."
