President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping for a state dinner at the White House, an event marked by discussions on critical global issues including the war in Iran, the development of artificial intelligence, and the sensitive topic of Taiwan.
The lavish black-tie affair in the East Room brought together prominent figures from both the tech industry and Washington D.C.'s political establishment, offering an opportunity to address significant geopolitical friction between the two nations. Trump described a developing friendship with Xi, whom he has known for over a decade.
Key Discussions
During private talks preceding the dinner, the leaders and their delegations discussed the ongoing conflict in Iran. China Central Television reported that Xi expressed support for a return to an interim deal aimed at de-escalating the war, an agreement that had previously broken down. Trump has sought to leverage China's economic ties to Iran to influence the situation, though China has condemned U.S. military actions.
The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, which Trump has proposed rebranding as 'superintelligence,' were also a central theme. While Trump has expressed a desire to maintain the status quo regarding AI regulation, Xi stated that China and the U.S. have the responsibility to manage AI for beneficial purposes and ensure it remains under human control. The two nations' finance ministers had previously met to discuss a potential "notification mechanism" for AI-related incidents.
Xi also urged the U.S. to "prudently handle the Taiwan issue" and adhere to opposing Taiwan's independence, according to Chinese state media. Taiwan remains a highly sensitive issue for Beijing, which considers the island Chinese territory. The U.S. maintains a policy of opposing unilateral changes to the status quo by either side and is obligated by law to provide Taiwan with defensive capabilities.
A Star-Studded Evening
The state dinner itself was a notable event, with attendees including tech leaders such as Elon Musk of Tesla, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Tim Cook of Apple, alongside political figures like Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Chief Justice John Roberts, and Speaker Mike Johnson. The White House dining room was adorned with red linens and floral arrangements, with the First Lady's office noting the aesthetic choices were inspired by the cultural significance of the color red in Chinese history.
Trump presented Xi with a statue of a bald eagle, symbolizing American freedom. Xi, in turn, thanked the Trumps for their hospitality, stating that the two leaders had reached common understanding on many issues. The dinner featured a multi-course menu blending American and Asian flavors, accompanied by musical performances.
Earlier in the visit, Trump broke with over a decade of presidential protocol by personally greeting Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews. The arrival was marked by a military flyover. Additionally, Xi announced that China would send two giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta, continuing the tradition of panda diplomacy.
The visit is scheduled to include a tour of the National Archives, where the leaders will view founding documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Further diplomatic engagements are planned, including potential meetings at the APEC summit and the G20 summit later in the year.
