Trump Hosts Xi Amid Greenland Security Deal Casting Shadow Over Arctic Influence
The U.S. president's state dinner for the Chinese leader was juxtaposed with a newly signed security agreement designed to restrict non-NATO military presence in Greenland, a region China has long eyed for its strategic importance and resources.
President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping for a three-day state visit culminating in a formal White House arrival ceremony, high-stakes talks, and a state dinner attended by leading technology executives. The visit unfolded against the backdrop of a recently signed Greenland security agreement that, upon implementation, would prevent non-NATO countries like China from establishing a military presence in the Arctic territory.
During their meetings, Trump and Xi discussed economic and trade matters, as well as cooperation on artificial intelligence and other shared priorities, according to a senior U.S. official. However, the specific outcomes and concrete agreements reached remained unclear.
The state dinner on Thursday evening drew 134 guests, including prominent figures from the technology sector such as Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Lisa Su of AMD, Tim Cook of Apple, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, and Sundar Pichai of Google. Christine Balling, senior vice president for professional affiliations at The Institute of World Politics, suggested that inviting these AI leaders was a strategic move to underscore the United States' position in the global AI race.
"I think the significance of the timing of this meeting, whether it's intentional or not, shows that the Trump administration is taking the future of AI and the world very, very seriously," Balling told Fox News Digital. "I think that is the most significant takeaway. But the bottom line is, I think the most important images were those of all of the AI techs who were invited to that state dinner."
The Greenland security agreement, formally signed on September 22, initiated a period of heightened U.S. military presence in the territory and aimed to curtail Chinese military activities and sensitive investments. This development followed months of negotiations and Trump's public emphasis on securing U.S. influence in the Arctic, a region where China has expressed increasing interest. Beijing has previously signaled ambition in Greenland through infrastructure projects and interest in the territory's natural resources, including rare earth minerals.
Balling characterized the Greenland pact as a significant victory for the U.S. and the "free world," asserting that it grants the United States the ability to expand its military bases and to screen other nations interested in military presence or investment. She also noted that the agreement provides the U.S. and NATO allies with a first right of refusal for mining, oil and gas, and data center development.
"I also have to say for all of those who were mocking the Trump administration and President Trump's talk about buying or invading Greenland, they have an egg on their faces now," Balling stated. "I never for a moment thought that President Trump was serious about this. I think that what he was serious about, was exactly what was achieved in the agreement that was just signed."
China has for years sought to enhance its role in the Arctic, promoting a "Polar Silk Road" initiative that encompasses commerce, research, and resource development. Balling suggested that China's opposition to the U.S.-Denmark-Greenland agreement stems partly from U.S. reliance on China for critical mineral supply chains.
The state dinner and talks between Trump and Xi occurred after Trump's May visit to Beijing, which had been characterized by his pre-departure statements about significant trade deals. The White House did not release the full economic package until two days after that summit. This visit marked a contrast to the immediate announcement of deals following his previous meeting with Xi.
