Former President Donald Trump hosted Dario Amodei, CEO of artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, for a private dinner at the White House on Sunday. The meeting comes shortly after a federal appeals court upheld a Pentagon decision to classify Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, a move that had escalated tensions between the two.
This private dinner represents a significant shift after months of public clashes between Trump and Amodei regarding the military's potential use of Anthropic's AI models and the broader debate over AI safety guardrails. Trump had previously criticized Amodei's calls for AI regulation, even mockingly referring to him as a "perfect little angel" on social media on September 14th, while questioning the severity of existential AI risks as a "hoax."
Despite these past criticisms, Trump personally extended the invitation to Amodei, who was unable to attend a recent White House state dinner due to a scheduling conflict. The former president has expressed that while he remains cautious about slowing AI development due to global competition, particularly with China, he does not intend to halt the industry's progress.
Amodei has advocated for a more cautious approach to AI development, emphasizing the risks associated with increasingly powerful systems. Anthropic has pushed for greater oversight of advanced AI models and has sought to place restrictions on their use, particularly concerning mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous lethal weapons. This stance has led to friction with the Pentagon, which sought access to Anthropic's Claude models for "all lawful uses."
The dispute over military access to Claude models has resulted in legal challenges. In August, a federal judge in California ruled that the Pentagon's designation of Anthropic under one supply-chain statute was unlawful. However, a divided U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit recently upheld a separate Pentagon action under the Federal Acquisition Supply Chain Security Act, with the majority finding that Anthropic's ability to build restrictions into its models could pose an operational risk.
The White House and Anthropic have not yet released official statements regarding the dinner. The meeting between Trump and Amodei may signal a potential recalibration of dialogue between the former president and a key figure in the AI safety movement, despite their differing perspectives on AI development and regulation.
