Former President Donald Trump has issued a pardon to Emory Jones, a longtime friend and business associate of hip-hop artist Jay-Z. Jones, an executive at Jay-Z's Roc Nation and a co-founder of the fashion brand Paper Planes, had been serving a federal drug conviction sentence.

The clemency decision was announced this week by Alice Marie Johnson, who was herself pardoned by Trump in 2020 and now works with the White House on pardon matters. Johnson stated that Trump granted clemency and pardons to 30 individuals, including Jones, whose cases were carefully reviewed.

Jones was sentenced in 2000 to 188 months, nearly 16 years, in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute cocaine in 1999. His sentence was later reduced by 37 months to 151 months following a request from his legal team in 2009. As part of that request, letters of support were submitted, including one from Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter.

In his 2009 letter to the judge, Jay-Z stated his intention to offer Jones a position as an executive assistant with Roc Apparel Group upon his release, with a starting salary of $50,000. He described Jones as intelligent, possessing strong interpersonal skills, and having a solid work ethic.

Jones himself wrote about his conviction, reflecting on the importance of overcoming excuses and demonstrating positive growth. He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by his support system, including Jay-Z.

Today, Jones holds a leadership role as the head of Lifestyle at Roc Nation and is involved with the fashion brand Paper Planes, co-founded with Jay-Z in 2014.
