President Donald Trump marked Secretary of State Marco Rubio's 55th birthday with a unique gift: a gold-framed collage featuring 68 iterations of the viral "Rubio realizing" meme. The mosaic, presented in May but recently drawing wider attention, includes various Photoshopped images of Rubio as different characters, from an astronaut to an ayatollah, surrounding the original photograph of him appearing slumped on an Oval Office couch.
Trump signed the central photograph with a presidential endorsement reading, "You are great." The collage was created by Dan Scavino and has reportedly been updated as more memes have emerged. Rubio acknowledged that he initially disliked the photograph that sparked the meme phenomenon, attributing his posture to the Oval Office couch's lack of support. However, he has since come to find the internet's creative interpretation amusing.
The meme originated on February 28, 2025, during a meeting in the Oval Office with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Vice President JD Vance, and other administration officials. A photograph from the meeting captured Rubio in an expression that the internet quickly interpreted as a moment of realization.
Rubio holds multiple real-world roles, serving as secretary of state and acting national security advisor, and previously held acting positions as archivist and administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development. The meme collage playfully acknowledges this accumulation of responsibilities, imagining him in numerous other hypothetical jobs.
