Trump Fires Back at Obama Over White House Renovation Remarks
Former President Obama's joke about the White House looking like a 'Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory' prompts a strong defense and counter-criticism from President Trump.
President Donald Trump has vehemently defended his White House renovations, launching a scathing critique of former President Barack Obama's predecessor's tenure and the condition in which he claims Obama left the executive residence. The strong remarks came after Obama joked that Trump's renovations had the White House "looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory."
During a rally in Mississippi on Monday night, Trump told reporters to relay a message to Obama, stating that the White House was left "filthy, dirty and broken" by the previous administration. He claimed that "the windows are cracked, and the exterior monuments on the outside are good on one side and cracked on the other side." Trump asserted that upon visiting the White House 20 years prior, he was surprised by its dilapidated state and that his subsequent renovations were necessary and aesthetically superior.
Trump also addressed Obama's comparison to the Cheesecake Factory, a successful company, suggesting it revealed a dislike for thriving businesses. "He said, 'this isn't a Cheesecake Factory,' can you believe it, which is a very successful company. He doesn't like successful companies," Trump stated. He further criticized Obama's presidency, calling him "a lousy president" and "not smart at all" for his handling of the country.
Trump's administration has undertaken numerous refurbishments, including flattening the East Wing for an event space, laying hardscaping over the Rose Garden, repainting exterior columns, and installing gold fixtures in the Oval Office. The White House's official X account also joined the exchange, posting a mock menu highlighting Trump's accomplishments in response to the Cheesecake Factory comparison.
Earlier, during a campaign appearance in Ohio, Obama had commented on Trump's building projects, remarking that he "should be on HGTV." Obama specifically questioned the amount of gold decor and pointed to projects like the new helipad on the South Lawn, joking, "What's up with the gold? I mean, he's got the one that's looking like Saddam Hussein opened a cheesecake factory."
Beyond the renovations, Obama also touched on accusations of corruption, suggesting Trump was focused on enriching himself, his family, and his associates. He cited Trump's cryptocurrency ventures and government contracts involving his family's businesses as examples of a pattern of self-enrichment and a culture of favoritism. Obama stated, "We have lost count of all the deals he and his family have done. You can't keep up. Meme coins, taxpayer-funded contracts for his kids' companies."
