New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, whom former President Donald Trump has publicly favored, overcame an early-season injury scare to lead his team downfield for a touchdown during head coach John Harbaugh’s preseason debut. The Giants faced the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium.
Dart was sacked by Vikings safety Jay Ward in the first quarter, ending the period on the ground. He was taken to the medical tent for a concussion evaluation. However, Dart cleared the protocol and returned to the game two plays later.
Upon his return, Dart rolled to his left from the 15-yard line and threw a touchdown pass to rookie third-round pick Malachi Fields. The pass was completed in a crowded end zone.
Dart completed 3 of 4 passes for 26 yards and the touchdown before being pulled from the game. Fans have expressed optimism about his performance, with one noting his ability to make difficult throws and another predicting a "long, solid career."
Dart has become a notable figure for Giants fans and has also gained attention from former President Trump. Trump recently had Dart introduce him at a rally and has spoken positively about the young quarterback, calling him a "big, strong guy" and a "great quarterback."
Trump listed the Giants among his Super Bowl favorites for the upcoming season, stating, "I like their quarterback a lot."
Dart's association with Trump, stemming from his introduction at a May rally, previously caused a stir within the Giants organization. Defensive player Abdul Carter publicly questioned Dart's appearance at the rally in a since-deleted social media post. Both players later addressed the situation, aiming to ensure their political differences would not affect the team's locker room dynamics, with Carter acknowledging Dart as a leader and the "face of our franchise."
