Former President Donald Trump's recent pledge to issue a $5,000 "dividend" to every adult American if Republicans secure control of both the House and the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections has drawn scrutiny, particularly regarding the plan's timing and financial feasibility.
During an exclusive interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump was pressed on why the promised funds could not be distributed immediately. Ingraham asked, "If you have the money, why not give it now?"
Trump responded that the payment would be contingent on a Republican victory, stating, "Because the Democrats can't do it." He asserted that for Democrats, economic growth would be negative, whereas under his administration, it was "so positive." He attributed this economic success to tariffs, claiming the U.S. was taking in "$21 trillion" due to these duties.
However, the source of the estimated $1.3 trillion needed for the proposed payments remains unclear. While Trump suggested funding would come from tariff revenue, the total collected from duties since his return to the White House is significantly less than the required amount, reportedly in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Furthermore, a Supreme Court ruling earlier in 2026 found that a tariff program implemented in April 2025 was done improperly, requiring the federal government to return profits.
The announcement has also generated mixed reactions within the Republican party. Joe Lonsdale, co-founder of Palantir and a GOP donor, expressed opposition to "bread and circus bribes," even while supporting the goal of winning the midterms. Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky criticized the proposal, calling it an attempt to buy votes and warning of potential inflation. He also quipped that he would not accept less than $10,000.
This latest pledge follows previous promises from Trump, including a $5,000 "DOGE dividend" and a $2,000 "tariff dividend."
Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene commented on X, formerly Twitter, that the "$5,000 for the peasants will be in the mail after the election only if you vote Republican, along with those DOGE and tariff money checks."
