Donald Trump is facing public ridicule regarding his close relationship with his personal aide Natalie Harp, a situation drawing increased attention amid First Lady Melania Trump's diminished public profile.
Senator Jon Ossoff, a 2028 Democratic hopeful, recently criticized Trump during a rally in Georgia. Ossoff accused Trump of disengaging from his presidential duties, suggesting he prefers golfing and trading stocks over Oval Office responsibilities. "See, he doesn't want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie [Harp] on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar," Ossoff stated.
Sources have described Harp, 35, as Trump's closest aide, referring to her as his "connective tissue." Some reports suggest she has greater access to Trump than his chief of staff, Susie Wiles. Harp is also known for sharing printed articles and social media posts with Trump, earning her the nickname "human printer." She is frequently seen by Trump's side at events and on trips.
Harp was among a select group of aides who accompanied Trump when he departed Air Force One in Turkey to board a decoy military jet due to an Iranian assassination threat. Trump, along with Harp, Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, and Oval Office operations director Walt Nauta, used a catering truck to reach the secondary aircraft, while other cabinet officials remained on the larger plane.
Reports from New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, detailed in their book "Regime Change," shed light on Harp's influence. They reported that Harp left personal notes for Trump, including one stating, "You are all that matters to me." Swan noted the letters were sufficiently unusual to attract the attention of the Secret Service and reportedly surprised Susie Wiles. Haberman and Swan also quoted Trump telling staff that Harp's affection for him rivaled that of his wife and children, stating, "All of you will go off and make money. She'll never leave me."
This scrutiny of Harp's relationship with Trump coincides with a noticeable decrease in Melania Trump's public engagements. According to NBC News, she has participated in approximately half the number of events during Trump's current term compared to his first. Melania Trump was notably absent from several high-profile events, including Lindsey Graham’s funeral, the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, and the dignified transfer ceremony for four U.S. service members killed in Iran. In contrast, Harp accompanied Trump to the latter event, wearing a somber, all-black dress. Harp was also seen at Trump's Bedminster golf club in New Jersey, shaking hands with supporters alongside the former president.
