President Donald Trump is experiencing the highest disapproval rating on gas prices of any president on record, according to CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten.
Enten, citing his "Enten's Aggregate" of polling data, stated that Trump's average disapproval rating on gas prices is 79%. This figure surpasses the peaks of previous presidents, including Joe Biden, who reached 72%, Barack Obama at 68% in 2011, and George W. Bush at 75% in 2006.
"Donald Trump takes the cake as these $4-plus gas prices continue to give us pain at the pump," Enten said on CNN's "News Central." "The American people are taking their anger out on the president of the United States."
Enten also pointed to a "rare trifecta" of majority disapproval across party lines. A late July CNN-SSRS poll indicated that 52% of Republicans, 85% of independents, and 96% of Democratic voters disapproved of Trump's handling of gas prices.
Disapproval Among Working Class
The analysis extended to the working class, a demographic that has significantly contributed to Trump's support. The same CNN-SSRS survey revealed that 86% of all voters earning less than $50,000 annually disapprove of Trump's performance on gas prices. This breaks down to 90% of independents, 93% of Democrats, and 66% of Republicans within this income bracket.
"My goodness gracious," Enten commented on the numbers. "We're talking 2 in 3 Republicans; 2 in 3 Republicans! Independents, 90%. Democrats, 93%. I mean, you just don't ever see numbers like these. These are just atrocious numbers among the working class. A trifecta, indeed."
Enten concluded that these figures indicate a shift in public opinion "regardless of party identification."
