Following a significant midterm defeat that saw Democrats regain control of Congress, President Donald Trump is facing increasing pressure to reshuffle his cabinet, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth identified as a potential candidate for dismissal.
Despite Trump's public statements that he has "every intention to keep" Hegseth, sources indicate that the President has been discussing the possibility of removing his Defense Secretary with advisors. The timing of any potential change is also a consideration, as Trump acknowledged it would be easier to confirm a new Defense Secretary before Democrats assume control of the Senate in January.
Democrats have signaled their intent to target Hegseth, with Representative Jason Crow stating on October 25 that removing him from the Pentagon was a "priority number one" if Democrats retook the House. At least three other Democrats have reportedly filed articles seeking Hegseth's impeachment. A Democratic aide suggested that Hegseth was viewed as "the lowest hanging fruit" due to perceived animosity from both Republican and Democratic senators and staff.
However, no Cabinet member has been successfully removed from office by the House of Representatives.
Trump made these comments while addressing reporters at the construction site of a new White House ballroom. He largely focused on his "vanity projects" rather than the election results, although he had earlier attributed the Republican losses in part to "the Iran war and soaring gas prices."
In separate comments, Trump criticized what he called a "ballot scheme" in Alaska's midterm elections, targeting a candidate named "Decoy Dan." He alleged that Democrats had recruited a similarly named candidate to run against Republican Senator Dan Sullivan to confuse voters and aid Democratic nominee Mary Peltola. Trump asserted that the votes for the "Fake Dan Sullivan" should be given to the real Dan Sullivan, declaring, "There is no other fair solution!"
Many Republican allies experienced electoral defeats, contributing to the party's loss of control over the House and Senate. These losses are seen by some as an indictment of Trump's time in office and portend potential future investigations and political challenges.
