Trump Faces Pivotal Choice on Iran Post-Midterms

President Donald Trump has postponed potential military action against Iran until after the midterm elections, a period of 24 days.

Despite economic sanctions that have severely impacted Iran's economy, with inflation at its highest since World War II and oil loadings hitting zero in September for the first time since 1979, the regime appears willing to endure significant hardship. Reports indicate that Iranian economic officials have threatened severe penalties for discussing the country's currency exchange rates. However, Iran's aggression has continued, with increased strikes on shipping disrupting oil outflows from the Gulf, which had previously returned to pre-war levels.

Trump has indicated that major strikes against Iran are being prepared for the period following the elections. He has also stated that a deal with Iran is not his primary objective, emphasizing Iran's repeated failure to uphold its commitments. Special envoy Steve Witkoff is reportedly making progress in negotiations, with Iran expressing a willingness to concede significant terms.

The administration faces a critical decision: The current strategy of economic pressure may not be sufficient to dismantle Iran's nuclear and missile programs or resolve disputes over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's continued control over, or claims to, the Strait can independently depress shipping and keep oil prices elevated. Without an enforceable agreement that addresses these core issues, Trump may need to consider more assertive military action after the midterm elections, when political considerations are less of a constraint.
