Trump Eyes Upstate NY Trip to Boost GOP House Hopes

President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit upstate New York next week, a trip intended to support his ally Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman in his gubernatorial bid and to bolster Republican efforts in potentially competitive House races. Trump is slated to campaign with Blakeman in Syracuse on October 9, as the Republican party seeks to increase turnout in a state where several congressional contests have become unexpectedly close.

Blakeman, who has been critical of Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul on issues such as tax cuts and energy costs, is reportedly keeping his gubernatorial campaign competitive. His performance could influence down-ballot races, and Trump's involvement is seen as a way to energize Republican voters and ensure their participation.

"In ‘22, New York state determined the House majority. And in 2026, New York could determine it again," stated one Republican operative. The party points to former Rep. Lee Zeldin’s 2022 gubernatorial campaign as an example, arguing that his effort helped drive Republican turnout statewide, even in his eventual loss to Hochul.

However, Trump's high visibility carries a potential drawback. His presence can also energize Democratic voters who oppose him. "I think it’s going to cut both ways. On the one hand, Trump’s negatives in New York are very deep. People are very emotional — the ones that don’t like Trump really don’t like him," explained Grant Reeher, a political science professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship. Reeher added that Trump's ability to generate enthusiasm could be a net positive for Republican candidates. "Certainly one thing the guy is good at is getting people ramped up. On balance it may be something that could help the Republican candidates."

In the North Country, Republican congressional candidate Anthony Constantino has openly embraced Trump, even displaying a "Vote for Trump" sign on his printing company's roof. Constantino recently loaned an additional $4 million to his campaign, bringing his personal loans to $16 million, as he seeks to hold retiring Rep. Elise Stefanik’s seat for the GOP. The race in the historically Republican 21st Congressional District is attracting attention, with Constantino's Democratic opponent, Blake Gendebien, reporting $2 million raised in the last quarter. Analysts suggest that factors such as Constantino's polarizing image and the impact of trade policies on the region could make the district more competitive than usual, despite Trump's 21-point victory there in 2024.

Another closely watched race is in the Hudson Valley, where Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) faces Democrat Cait Conley. Recent polls show a tight contest, with an Emerson College poll placing Conley ahead 48%-46%, while an internal Lawler poll indicated a 50%-47% Republican lead, both within their respective margins of error. Political observers believe Lawler's campaign is particularly focused on turnout.

Trump's visit may also benefit Republican Kailee Buller, who is challenging Rep. John Mannion (D-NY) in another district where Republican turnout could be crucial.
