President Donald Trump stated he was “a little bit surprised” by the midterm election results, which saw Republicans suffer significant losses. In public remarks following the Democrats' projected victories, Trump expressed that he had anticipated better performance.
"I thought we would do better," Trump told Fox News. "We had tremendous rallies, thousands of people outside let alone inside that couldn't get in."
Trump attributed some of the losses to Republican candidates and the impact of high gas prices, exacerbated by the war in Iran. He also suggested that he would have secured a landslide victory if his name had been on the ballot. "I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!" Trump posted on his social media platform.
Despite these comments, Trump indicated a willingness to collaborate with Democrats on certain issues. "I'd consider doing whatever I think is appropriate and good for the country," he told Politico when asked about potentially striking an immigration deal.
However, Trump also signaled a potential for obstruction, posting an image of his signature red hat with the word "VETO" across it. He suggested that he would utilize his veto power if Democrats were to pass legislation. "They can send over, you know, 50 different great bills that they're all excited about, and I send them back with a nice stamp veto," he said to Fox News.
Trump also directed criticism at some Republican figures, including the incumbent governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, who was projected to lose his race. Trump labeled Abbott a "RINO" (Republican in Name Only) and suggested that Abbott’s perceived shift in recent months contributed to his defeat.
