Trump Endorses Netanyahu Amid Israel's High-Stakes Election

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for reelection, describing him as a "great warrior" and a "greater partner for peace" who has been an ally in confronting Iran. This backing comes as Israel approaches a national vote, widely seen as a referendum on Netanyahu's leadership and his pursuit of war objectives, including disarming Hamas and Hezbollah and countering Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Netanyahu responded to the endorsement by thanking Trump and affirming their shared commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The relationship between the two leaders is described by the Israeli Prime Minister's Office as unparalleled in the history of U.S.-Israel relations, highlighting their alignment in what is called the "front" against shared adversaries.

Israel's longest-serving prime minister, Netanyahu has had a long career in public service, beginning his diplomatic tenure in 1982 and entering politics in the 1990s. He has served multiple terms, credited with economic liberalization and fostering Israel's high-tech sector. However, his current term has faced significant challenges, including the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas-led massacre and widespread public debate over his security policies.

The upcoming election is marked by uncertainty, with most polls suggesting neither Netanyahu's bloc nor the opposition, led by Gadi Eisenkot, has a clear path to forming a majority government. This situation raises the possibility of further political instability, potentially leading to another election cycle.

Experts suggest that any incoming government will face persistent security challenges. Professor Tamar Hermann of the Israel Democracy Institute noted that Netanyahu has been criticized for failing to achieve key objectives, such as toppling the Iranian regime or dismantling Hamas, and for concessions made to ultra-Orthodox parties. The period leading up to the election has also seen public anger over the handling of the hostage crisis following the October 7 attacks.

Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren characterized Netanyahu as a "leader of history," willing to withstand international criticism to fulfill what he perceives as his role in safeguarding Israel from existential threats, particularly from Iran. Oren suggested that Netanyahu's legacy will be defined by his efforts to protect Israel from such dangers.
