President Donald Trump has accused Iran of "foolishly" violating a recently established ceasefire agreement following a drone attack on cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a social media post on Friday afternoon, Trump stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran deployed at least four one-way attack drones toward vessels traversing the strategic waterway. According to the President, one drone struck the upper deck of a large cargo ship, causing damage, though the vessel was able to continue its journey. U.S. forces reportedly intercepted and downed three other drones.
"This is a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement," Trump added.
The incident represents a direct breach of a memorandum of understanding signed between the U.S. and Iran over the weekend in Switzerland. Vice President JD Vance had traveled to Switzerland for negotiations with Iran, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar. The agreement stipulates that vessels must be allowed unrestricted transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
The British military also announced on Thursday that a vessel off the coast of Oman had been struck. Trump did not specify the identity of the ships targeted in his statement.
