Trump Defends Pausing Russian Sanctions, Criticizes Zelensky's Attacks on Refineries
Former President Trump stated his decision to halt sanctions aims to facilitate a peace deal and lower U.S. fuel prices, while condemning Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil infrastructure.
Former President Donald Trump has defended his decision to pause sanctions against Russia, asserting that the move is intended to facilitate a permanent peace deal between Russia and Ukraine and to provide relief from high fuel prices in the United States. Simultaneously, Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for Ukraine's continued strikes on Russian oil refineries.
Trump stated on social media that his approach is designed to prevent Russia from being "foolishly" driven away from the negotiating table. "My decision on Russia is a very simple one. I am in the process of negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine, and don’t want to do anything that will drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table," Trump posted on Truth Social.
He further elaborated, suggesting that "great progress is being made" in negotiations, including unspecified hostage discussions. This justification comes amid international scrutiny of his decision to lift sanctions previously imposed on Moscow.
Trump also directed sharp criticism toward President Zelensky, implying that the Ukrainian leader lacks a genuine desire to end the conflict. "Trump also tore into Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying he 'doesn’t want to end this war, and probably never did,'" according to the New York Post.
The former president's comments follow reports of Ukraine launching numerous drones targeting Russian territory, including attacks on oil facilities near St. Petersburg. These strikes have reportedly led to disruptions, including the damage of an oil terminal and flight cancellations at one of Russia's busiest airports.
