Former President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Lake Ontario should be renamed "Lake America," a declaration that quickly drew a wave of internet mockery and criticism. Trump told reporters that the name change was "something I’ve been thinking about for a long time."
This is not the first time Trump has proposed renaming a major body of water to include "America." Approximately 18 months prior, he suggested renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The "Lake America" proposal comes at a time of ongoing trade discussions between the U.S. and Canada, leading some to speculate the name change is intended as a political jab.
While the renaming might provoke a negative reaction from Canada, many social media users focused on the perceived absurdity of the suggestion. One widely shared observation noted that if Lake Ontario becomes "Lake America," the Great Lakes acronym, typically "HOMES" (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior), would change to "SHAME."
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum expressed enthusiastic support for the renaming, writing on X, formerly Twitter, "We’re on it, Mr. President. The places and waters that border our nation and support our economy should reflect the greatness of the United States. We are PROUD to implement your Executive Order to rename LAKE AMERICA."
Trump's announcement and Burgum's supportive response garnered significant attention online, with many users continuing to express skepticism and amusement.
