President Donald Trump has declared the cease-fire with Iran "over," ordering renewed military strikes in response to attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and stating he no longer wishes to engage in negotiations with the country. Trump voiced his frustration on Wednesday, stating, "I think we wasted a lot of time. We should just do our business. I don’t want to deal with them anymore. They’re scum."
The decision follows a period of renewed hostilities where Iran has been accused of violating the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June. According to reports, Iran has continued to conduct attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and has been observed undertaking construction projects at the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility, which is seen as a violation of the agreement. The initial cease-fire was intended to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remained fully open and to end hostilities.
Escalating rhetoric from Iranian officials has also contributed to the heightened tensions. Statements from Iran's Assembly of Experts have reportedly called for the death of President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During mourning ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, chants of "Death to America!" and "Revenge! Revenge!" were reportedly dominant. An official Iranian foreign ministry statement indicated that seeking justice against the United States and Israel for the former supreme leader's "blood" remains an enduring demand of the Iranian nation.
In response to Iran's actions, Trump has reimposed sanctions and ordered military strikes. He was also reportedly considering restoring a naval blockade and targeting civilian infrastructure. However, the President has indicated that a full-scale conflict is not anticipated, stating, "I don’t think [full-scale war is] going to start again. Anything that happens is going to be over very quickly. . . . We’re not looking for long term."
Critics argue that without a commitment to long-term consequences for Iran's actions, there is little incentive for the regime to adhere to any future agreements, particularly concerning its nuclear ambitions and support for groups like Hezbollah.
