President Donald Trump concluded his visit to Camp David earlier than planned, returning to the White House on Saturday evening amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. The early return coincided with Houthi rebels claiming responsibility for missile attacks on sites in Saudi Arabia.
Trump had been scheduled to spend the entire weekend at the presidential retreat. He arrived back at the White House via Marine One on Saturday at 7:57 p.m. local time. Aides Natalie Harp and Walt Nauta were observed among those disembarking.
Houthi Attacks and US Warnings
The U.S. State Department confirmed that the Houthis had engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including targeting civilian airports. "This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly," the department stated, advising Americans in the region to "seriously reconsider travel to and through the region" and to "exercise heightened vigilance."
Saudi Arabia confirmed on Saturday that it had intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at its capital, Riyadh. Video footage showed smoke and flames billowing over the city. The Houthis also claimed to have targeted facilities belonging to Saudi oil giant Aramco in Yanbu and other "sensitive sites" in Riyadh, though Saudi authorities stated that attempts to strike civilian infrastructure in Yanbu, Taif, Baysh, and Farasan were thwarted.
These attacks represent the first targeting of Riyadh since the escalation of fighting and mark a new front in the conflict involving Iran. The Houthis stated the strikes were in response to Saudi actions against the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.
Escalation in Yemen Conflict
The reported incidents follow a recent surge in fighting within Yemen. The Houthi rebels had recently advanced along the country's Red Sea coast, capturing the port city of Mokha and islands on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This has enhanced their surveillance capabilities of shipping traffic in the area.
This renewed fighting signals a return to intense conflict in Yemen after a period of relative calm. The U.S. has indicated it is not currently in conflict with the Houthi movement. The ongoing hostilities have raised concerns about market stability due to their proximity to vital global shipping corridors.
