Former U.S. President Donald Trump has weighed in on England's recent World Cup elimination, directing criticism at manager Thomas Tuchel for what he described as "unusual tactics." Trump's comments focused on the positioning of England captain Harry Kane during the team's semi-final defeat.
Speaking at a FIFA reception at Trump Tower, Trump stated, "You have a great player in England, who I played golf with – Harry, who's been fantastic. I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player." He questioned the decision to deploy Kane in defense after the team had taken the lead, remarking, "They took the lead, and they took their best player and put him in defence." Trump acknowledged his limited knowledge of soccer coaching but characterized the move as "unusual."
This is not the first time Trump has commented on the World Cup. Previously, he intervened to have Folarin Balogun's red card suspended through communication with FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Trump also mentioned playing golf with Harry Kane.
Kane had confirmed playing a round of golf with Trump approximately 18 months prior in Florida, describing the experience as "pretty surreal." He noted Trump's impressive golf game, even at an older age, and expressed hope to play as well when he is older. Trump had previously praised Kane on social media after his performance in a match against Mexico, calling him a "GREAT player."
However, Trump's recent remarks suggest he was unimpressed with England's defensive approach against Argentina after securing a lead. Tuchel had faced backlash for his tactical choices and substitutions following Anthony Gordon's opening goal in that match, with the manager reportedly attributing the outcome partly to England's "DNA."
Kane, who often drops deeper into midfield when England has possession, was observed defending in the closing stages of the match against Argentina, a strategy that did not align with Trump's view of how to utilize the star forward.
