Trump Considers Firing Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle Over Conduct
President expresses dissatisfaction with US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, amid reports of questionable behavior.
President Donald Trump has indicated that he is considering removing Kimberly Guilfoyle from her position as the US Ambassador to Greece, stating "we're not happy" with her conduct. The comments were made to reporters on Monday evening en route to a rally in Youngstown, Ohio.
Guilfoyle was confirmed by the US Senate last fall with expectations that she would maintain a high standard of conduct. However, reports have emerged detailing behavior that has drawn criticism.
In July, Guilfoyle was photographed at a beachside establishment in Mykonos with Bill White, the US Ambassador to Belgium. The following day, she reportedly traveled to Paris for Fashion Week. Earlier that month, Trump bypassed Greece on his return from the NATO summit in Turkey, despite Guilfoyle having informed local officials of a potential presidential visit.
Further scrutiny of Guilfoyle's actions came from top Democrats on the Senate and House foreign affairs committees, who urged Senator Marco Rubio to investigate her conduct based on reports from The Wall Street Journal. Representative Gregory Meeks of New York stated that if the reports were accurate, Guilfoyle was unfit for her role and should be removed.
The Wall Street Journal has published a series of reports alleging questionable conduct by Guilfoyle, including an alleged threat to a host country official, acceptance of improper gifts and services, and an offer to leverage her influence within the administration in exchange for payment of a substantial credit card bill.
An embassy official maintained that Guilfoyle adheres to all State Department ethical guidelines. However, a US official speaking anonymously indicated that both Trump and Rubio were "extremely pissed off" by the reported behavior and were expected to make a decision on potential action this week, following the Columbus Day holiday.
This official noted that Rubio was particularly displeased, especially given Guilfoyle's attendance and greeting during his recent visit to Athens while allegations were circulating.
Earlier reports by the Daily Mail also suggested that Guilfoyle's lifestyle has caused friction with members of Trump's family.
